Keep Local Backups, Too

Do not just rely on your server to keep backups of your web content. You should probably have a local backup, too. There are hard drives out there that you can buy for thirty bucks that store more information than you will ever possibly need, so it is not as if you just do not have the space. Keeping local backups means that if something happens to your FTP server, if you forget your password or if you just all of a sudden decide to stop paying for your server space, you still have your website backed up safely on disk.

Update Your Backups

Many FTP programs have an automatic backup system that will store backups for you. However, you may need to download or upload your backup backups manually or let your FTP access your backup storage drive. In any event, make sure to keep your backups updated regularly. The last thing you need is to find that the last month of work has gone to waste because you have not backed up in several weeks.

Hold Onto Your Backups

Let’s say that you redesign your site. Along the way, maybe you lose a few pages, or perhaps after awhile, you decide you like your old design better. In these events, you will wish you had an older version of your site handy. Hold onto those older versions as well as your most recent changes, because you never know when you will want to access it or just check out the “vintage” version of the site.
